The Artist

My name is Tagesech Tyo-Dickerson. I was born in Kembata Tembaro, in the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples' Region of Ethiopia where I lived with my birth family until age six. At age seven, I was adopted and spent my childhood moving around Europe.

I am an artist: a painter, a printmaker, and a lover of color, pencil, and line — of African culture, human faces, raw expression, and imperfection.

Through painting, I am able to establish a sense of openness toward my roots, my culture, and my sense of self. Art has allowed me to heal parts of my pain, grow as a thinker and maker, and through my work, I hope others can see the truth I have come to embrace. Life is art.
